The new Dirty Projectors song ‘Up In Hudson’ is an elegy — to the Obama years, to a generation of indie rock, and to a relationship.  Over the course of nine verses and almost eight minutes, the lyrics situate David Longstreth & his band in the vivid textures of the recent past like a millennial Blood On The Tracks.  It is a piece of epic storytelling unlike anything else in Dirty Projectors’ discography.

To arrive where we began and know the place for the first time: ‘Up In Hudson’ is an origin story for a new chapter of Dirty Projectors. 

And with it, Dirty Projectors announce their long-awaited 7th LP.

The new album does everything we want and expect from Dirty Projectors — but in a way we never could have imagined or anticipated.  In a career of surprising conceptual gambits, unexpected stylistic evolutions, and continually changing lineups — this is, as DJ Khaled says, “ANOTHER ONE”!

FRANCOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM SOLIDE MIRAGE, RELEASED 3RD MARCH 2017

Domino are proud to announce Solide Mirage, the fourth studio album from Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains. An album of strength, beauty, ups and downs, Solide Mirage is the group’s most outspoken and deep-rooted work to date, and is set for release on March 3rd 2017.

Alongside the announcement of Solide Mirage, Frànçois & The Atlas Mountains have shared the album’s first single, ‘Grand Dereglement’, plus a video directed by Jack Barraclough and Frànçois himself. The video is a collaboration between Frànçois and Palestinian Dabké dancer Mohamed Okal, who fled with his family from the conflicts in Gaza, where he used to work as an ambulance driver. The two met in a volunteer refugee space in Brussels where Okal taught Dabké. On the video Frànçois says: “The lyrics of the song are about the great changes in the world that move populations, and force the weaker to adapt to an intense and strenuous lifestyle. Filming Dabké dancing inside one the most emblematic buildings of the Capital of Europe (Palais de Justice) is a way of showing the positive side of civilisation shifts.”

In the time since 2014’s Piano Ombre, Frànçois Marry rediscovered his adolescent passion for the power of grunge. This energy he “lost on the way”, in his own words, resurfaced on two occasions. A collaboration with Hedi Slimane, who allowed him to immerse himself in the punk and grunge scene of L.A. - with bands like Wand and Sunflower Bean in particular - revived his passion for this electricity. Secondly, and especially, as the band performed live dates in the Middle East, they found themselves playing to a youth still feverish after its Arab Spring. “We played in Istanbul, Lebanon, Alexandria and Cairo in 2015”, explains Frànçois. “We discovered a youth eager for music, in particular the Egyptian youth, who had made the revolution two years earlier.”

As a man and as an artist, it felt necessary to have that grunge-ful spite, that healthy anger, to survive the horrors of 2015 and the chaos of the world, referred to in “Grand Dérèglement”, the introduction of Solide Mirage. Attacks, wars, the migrant crisis, generalised fear, the pre-apocalyptic atmosphere: a dark year for all and one which incited profound questions in Frànçois Marry. “We questioned ourselves a lot. It’s delicate to speak about politics in songs, but inevitable when you write in moments like these. I have a natural attraction to abstract poetry but I realised that it had become a head-in-the-sand technique. I do not understand why musicians do not ask themselves more questions about the responsibility of their words. And considering the realities of life in the year 2015, I had to think about what we wanted to say”

Solide Mirage - like an imperceptible dream, a fantasy where reality shifts as one approaches it – is a perfect definition for this protean, changeable-yet-direct album which reveals new facets and new territories in every listen. Sometimes soft (on 1982, Apocalypse à Ipsos, Pepétuel été, 100.000.000), sometimes tough (Bête Morcelée and its rush of pure grunge, Grand Dérèglement and the roughness and splinters of Jamais Deux Pareils), sometimes crazy (the digitized trance of Âpres Après), but always highly political, whether direct or reading between the lines.

The album was recorded in Jet Studios in Brussels and produced by Ash Workman, who also worked on Piano Ombre and who has worked with Metronomy and Christine & The Queens, with strings performed by Owen Pallett.

To celebrate the release of Solide Mirage, Frànçois will be playing a string of live dates across the UK at the end of March 2017.

SPIRAL STAIRS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DORIS AND THE DAGGERS TO BE RELEASED MARCH 24TH

It’s been eight years since Scott Kannberg, aka Spiral Stairs (founding member of Pavement and Preston School of Industry), released any new music. He knows that. The years just have a habit of slipping away sometimes.

You can’t hurry genius – not even the genial, unforced and unpretentious genius that has long been Scott’s forte. Today, Spiral Stairs announces news of his second album Doris and The Daggers – to be released on March 24th through Domino - and shares the first track from it, the album opener ‘Dance (Cry Wolf)’. Its Roxy Music meets Wire slink and stompable groove is a “positive, dance-away-the-pain thing” says Scott whilst the video features Jason Lytle from Grandaddy.

Doris and The Daggers is worth the wait, it showcases the most personal and emotional music Kannberg has ever written, reflecting the life changes that occurred over those eight years. During that stretch, Scott weathered the loss of friends, treasured the joys of fatherhood, lived life as an Australian and even ate haggis meat – experiences that inform these warm, sweetly melodic and soundly honest songs.

The first Spiral Stairs record The Real Feel came in 2009, just as Pavement were announcing a hugely successful burst of reunion shows. After that, Scott and his wife moved to Brisbane, Australia, started a family and life simply got in the way.

Having moved back to Los Angeles, the original concept for the album was to go to Seattle’s Orbit Studios and “record the whole thing in a week, like the old days.” Then, a month before the trip, Scott awoke to heart-breaking news: Darius Minwalla, who had drummed with Preston School of Industry and on The Real Feel, and was scheduled to play on the mooted Seattle sessions, died suddenly in his sleep.

Scott was deep-sixed by the news, and it would be another three months before he was ready to return to the studio. By that time, the album had changed – the songs had grown in the interim, become longer, more emotional. Following Darius’ death, Scott went to spend time with his friend, singer-songwriter Kelley Stoltz, up in San Francisco, where they bounced ideas off each other. “His influence made me turn the record in an entirely different direction.”

Instead of a week-long blitz, Doris and The Daggers was recorded over a more civilised, considered batch of short sessions at Exactamundo studios in Eagle Rock, California. Long-time low-end foil Matt Harris returned on bass duties, while the drum-stool was adopted by Broken Social Scene’s Justin Peroff. The trio cut 30 songs in all, while a number of Scott’s close musical friends stepped in to make some key contributions. Peroff’s Broken Social Scene cohort Kevin Drew sang on ‘Emoshuns’, Kelley Stoltz lent guitar to the summery chime of ‘AWM’, and The National’s Matt Berninger lends vocals to the bittersweet, zephyr-light ‘Exiled Tonight’.

“I guess I’ve been writing songs for a while now,” reflects Kannberg on his second album. “I like hearing echoes of things I love in the music that I make. Writing music doesn’t come easy to me – it’s hard to write a song that’s good. But our memories slowly escape us as we get older, and in songs you kind of relive those moments, the things that matter.” And that’s part of the key to Doris and The Daggers’ charm, along with the lyrical wit and Scott’s unerring knack for tuneage as embraceably familiar as a beloved sweater; these songs are full of life, stories engagingly told, and a sense of affection for everything that happens within them. You’ll keep returning to them again and again, and hope that Scott doesn’t wait so long to cut his next batch.

BUZZCOCKS' 'SPIRAL SCRATCH' EP AND TIME'S UP RE-ISSUED FOR 40TH ANNIVERSARIES

Domino is proud to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Buzzcocks’ groundbreaking ‘Spiral Scratch’ EP with its reissue on the 27th of January 2017.  ‘Time’s Up’, the 1976 demos recorded with founder & singer Howard Devoto and originally released as a bootleg, will be reissued on the 10th of March, alongside the Buzzcocks (mk.1) Box , containing vinyl and CD of both ‘Spiral Scratch’ and ‘Times Up’ alongside rare reprinted ephemera of the time.  Watch ‘Breakdown’, filmed at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall shows in 1976 HERE.

Howard Devoto read this headline from a January 1976 Time Out review of ‘Rock Follies’, the 1970s TV musical drama following the ups and downs of the fictional female rock group, ‘Little Ladies’.

Adapting and appropriating it as the name for his new band that he had just formed with Pete Shelley having realised what a Sex Pistol was before anyone else. 

Buzzcocks formed having witnessed firsthand the white-heat of the early Sex Pistols. Howard and Pete went about organising the now infamous 1976 Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs that brought punk to the provinces and galvanized the new Manchester music revolution. The plan was to simply play support to the Pistols and then see what happened next…

Featuring the original line-up of Howard Devoto (vocals & songwriter), Pete Shelley (guitar & songwriter), Steve Diggle (bass guitar) and John Maher (drums), ‘Time’s Up’ was recorded at Revolution Studios, Bramhall Lane Stockport on the 18th of October 1976. The session, recording Buzzcocks’ live set at the time, cost £45 and was engineered by Andy MacPherson. 

In December of the same year, the band recorded the four track ‘Spiral Scratch’ EP with a minimum of fuss in ‘downtime’ at Indigo Studios, with Martin Hannett (then going under the pseudonym of Martin Zero) producing.  The band inexplicably took it upon themselves to release the EP themselves, somehow finding the monies necessary to press up 1000 copied on 7” vinyl, on their own New Hormones label.  The EP sold for £1 a copy. Within days of the initial release, with typical punk chaos and sweet disregard for any cohesive business strategy, Howard Devoto revealed that he was quitting the band.  The ‘Spiral Scratch’ EP quickly sold out its initial 1000 pressing, went on to sell 16,000 copies over the next six months and is now recognised as one of, if not the, most important records of the punk explosion – the first self-released record of its time, with the band responsible for everything, from sleeve design to distribution.

Spiral Scratch’ is testament to the power of punk’s possibilities and is an object lesson in how to debunk and demystify any hurdles presented by the establishment. The impact of this incredible seven inches of vinyl that kick-started the whole D.I.Y. culturegoes on, and on, and on, and on, and on…

We’ve significantly increased collections for this client base since our inception in 2011 and are now looking to add to our close-knit team.

The Role

The Repertoire Assistant will report to the Co-ordinators for Label and Performer Repertoire, assisting in the day-to-day operation of the business with a particular focus on our clients’ metadata. Duties will include:

  • registering – and auditing registrations of – catalogue at collecting societies worldwide
  • collating, sourcing and managing metadata
  • gathering supporting evidence/artwork
  • society unclaimed and dispute processes
  • general administration

Ideal Candidates

Candidates should possess a keen eye for detail, above average numeracy and be comfortable working with large volumes of data. Some familiarity with database systems or royalty/accounting software would also be an asset. Experience with Excel is essential.

DOMINO DOCUMENTS PRESENTS JULIA HOLTER LIVE STUDIO ALBUM

Domino is proud to launch Documents, an irregular new series of live studio recordings designed to capture the ever-evolving arrangements of our artists and their bands in high fidelity. Taking its inspiration from classic BBC sessions, each Documents release will be recorded in no more than a day or two at a world class studio in London. Or at least that’s the plan.

The first official Documents release is In The Same Room by Julia Holter, although Domino count Villagers’ Where Have You Been All My Life? as the honorary inaugural Document in all but name.

In The Same Room – to be released March 31st 2017 – is named after a song from Holter’s 2012 album Ekstasis, and this new career-spanning collection is the fruit of two days recording by Julia and her tremendous band (Corey Fogel – drums/vocals; Dina Maccabee - viola/vocals and Devin Hoff - stand-up bass) at RAK Studios in the days after their main stage performance at Green Man Festival in Wales.

Listen to ‘So Lillies’, a re-working of the track from her debut album Tragedy (2011) that highlights Julia’s constant progression and the breadth of her capabilities. 

Comprised of new arrangements of songs from three of her previous studio releases (Tragedy, Loud City Song and 2015's breakthrough Have You In My Wilderness), Holter's Domino Documents is an essential release for anyone who has witnessed her brilliant, beguiling band on tour around the world in the last five years as well as the perfect introduction to a truly important and innovative young artist.

In the 15 months since Have You In My Wilderness, Julia has gone from strength to strength, including playing the biggest headline show of her career in the UK last month – at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire – and scoring the soundtrack for the new Miles Teller film Bleed For This.

AUSTRA ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM FUTURE POLITICS

Austra, the recording project led by Canadian vocalist and producer Katie Stelmanis, is pleased to announce Future Politics, the third full length in their discography. Future Politics will be out on January 20th 2017.

Accompanying today’s announcement is a video for first single ‘Utopia’. Directed by THAT GO (Chairlift, Lapsley, Father John Misty), the video stars Stelmanis held hostage in an icy, modern apartment by an insidiously sinister device.

Says THAT GO on the video: "Katie came into the video project with a lot of ideas about the future. We discussed everything from food trends to Star Trek: The Next Generation. The video is more near-future than distant-future, with recognizable technology and modern protein sources.”

Future Politics, Austra’s third, and most ambitious album to date, calls for radical hope: “a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia,” says Katie Stelmanis, who leads Austra with the support of Maya Postepski (Princess Century, TR/ST), Dorian Wolf, and Ryan Wonsiak. “Not just hope in the future, but the idea that everyone is required to help write it, and the boundaries of what it can look like are both fascinating and endless. Its not about ‘being political,its about reaching beyond boundaries, in every single field.”

Future Politics is a collection of urgent, disciplined anthems for dancefloors and headphones alike, that asks each of us to remember that apocalypse is not an inevitability, but the product of human decision-making. It aims for a world without borders, where human compassion and curiosity drive technological innovation rather than profit, where the necessity of labour is replaced with time for creativity and personal growth, and the terror and destruction wrought by colonialism and white supremacy is recognized as a dark age in human history. The album is radicalism distilled: to galvanic beats, gorgeous, kinetic melodies, and the vulnerable majesty of Stelmanis’s voice.

Inspired by her time living in two cities – Montreal and Mexico City – and propelled by economic and philosophical texts she was reading throughout the album’s creation, Stelmanis was driven to face the world’s ailments with positivity, purpose, and engagement, rather than detachment or despair. Inspiration also came from European club culture - Objekt, Peter Van Hoesen, Lena Willikens as well as the likes of Massive Attack; in all, artists who understand the dancefloor as a source of radical ideas and radical joy.

Change, Rebecca Solnit (author, activist, environmentalist and editor at Harper’s Magazine) writes, comes from “writers, scholars, public intellectuals, social activists, and participants in social media”. Stelmanis adds “artists, club scenes, parties, teenagers, ghettoes” to that list - “every single persons idea about the future is valid and relevant, especially the freaks and the queers and the outsiders.”

SHIRLEY COLLINS SHARES VIDEO FOR LODESTAR'S 'PRETTY POLLY'

As the release of Lodestar  - Shirley Collins’ first album in 38 years - draws closer, Shirley is pleased to share a third track, ‘Pretty Polly’, from the forthcoming record. 

The song ‘Pretty Polly’ comes from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, Shirley says of the song: “I recorded this myself from the singing of Mrs Ollie Gilbert in 1959, on the field trip with Alan Lomax”. 

Directed by Layla Atkinson, the video was given one stipulation by Shirley, to incorporate a very special kind of puppet, a jig doll. These puppets come to life when jigged on a vibrating board and have been popular street entertainment for hundreds of years. Inspired by ‘Pretty Polly’ and these jig dolls, Atkinson decided to handcraft all the scenes in the video from cardboard and timber and shot it on 16MM on the hottest September day of the last 100 years.

Lodestar – to be released on November 4th through Domino Records - is a collection of English, American and Cajun songs dating from the 16th Century to the 1950s, recorded at Shirley’s home in Lewes by Stephen Thrower and Ossian Brown of Cyclobe and produced and musically directed by Ian Kearey.

Additionally, Shirley Collins will be performing at two record shops next month to launch the album – Rough Trade East in London alongside a Q&A with Pete Paphides and Union Music Store, Lewes where she will be joined by Brighton Morris Men.

Born in Hastings in 1935, Shirley was fascinated by folk songs as she was growing up, songs she heard on the radio or sung by her grandparents in Anderson shelters. She left home for London to immerse herself in the burgeoning folk scene; at a party held by Ewan MacColl she met Alan Lomax, and in 1959 she joined him in the USA on the renowned field trip ‘Southern Journey’, recording American folk songs and blues, a formative journey for her personally and professionally.

On her return to England, Shirley cemented her role at the forefront of the Folk Revival,  recording over a dozen albums including the influential Folk Roots, New Routes with avant-garde guitarist Davy Graham, and No Roses, from which The Albion Country Band was formed. However, in the 1980s, Shirley lost her singing voice – later diagnosed as a form of dysphonia - and withdrew from performing live. It was only in 2014, after coaxing from David Tibet (Current 93), that Shirley sang in public for the first time since 1982. 

Though Shirley Collins (MBE) has been absent from the music scene for many years, her impact has not diminished, the likes of Graham Coxon, Jonny Greenwood, Stewart Lee and Angel Olsen laud her and a documentary The Ballad of Shirley Collins is currently in progress. Additionally, she was given the ‘Good Tradition’ award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2008, elected President of the English Folk Dance & Song Society in the same year and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Sussex University this year. Last month, King Creosote released Astronaut Meets Appleman, a beautiful addition to his repertoire and an exploration of the tension and harmony between tradition and technology that invoked a feeling, KC says, of “being caught between heaven and earth”

Otherwise known as Kenny Anderson, KC is now pleased to share the video for ‘Love Life’. The glorious ‘Love Life’ showcases Kenny’s knack for a killer couplet: “Her jealous accusations know no bounds / Scarlett Johansson was never in my house”.

Following on from his sold out show in London last month, Anderson will be heading out on a full UK tour in January 2017 and will be joined by his 8-piece band at several of the shows including London’s Barbican.

Astronaut Meets Appleman follows KC’s breakthrough record From Scotland With Love (2014) and his Mercury-nominated collaboration with Jon Hopkins, Diamond Mine (2011).

The KC idiom – equal parts geometry, self-deprecation, cosmic wonder and seafaring poetry – remains intact on Astronaut Meets Appleman. But there is a renewed sense of space and letting the music breathe (lead, even) on the album – all the better to showcase a stunning ensemble cast that includes Catriona McKay (harp), Mairearad Green (bagpipes), Gordon Maclean (double bass), Hannah Fisher (violin, vocals), Sorren Maclean (guitar, vocals) and Pete Harvey (cello), alongside KC's regular rock diviners, and his baby daughter Louie Wren (on ambient reverie, 'Peter Rabbit Tea'). 

“I wanted to push myself songwriting-wise, so I went in with hardly anything and had to wing it,” KC reveals. “I wanted to try and flip the clock all the way back to sound like a younger me – or a less cynical me. In the past, I've been fixated on twisting and wrenching every line, but here I've let that go a bit, and I hope that lets you concentrate more on the music; on what’s going on around it.”

“I always feel I’m reaching for something, but I never get there, I wanted to get out of the usual places” KC muses, and this is reflected in the album's geography, which is more far-flung than usual. It was variously recorded at Analogue Catalogue in Ireland's County Down, An Tobar on the Isle of Mull, and Glasgow's Chem19 studios (HQ of long-time ally Paul Savage, who co-produced the LP with KC).

On Astronaut Meets Appleman, King Creosote is still upsetting apple-carts and dealing with the fallout, still appraising love and life, the moon, the stars; tide tables, bagpipe scores, zeros and ones; mathematics, ticking clocks and the beat of our hearts.

LITTLE CUB SIGN TO DOMINO, RELEASE DEBUT SINGLE ‘LOVELESS’ 11TH NOVEMBER

Introducing London band Little Cub, whose debut single ‘Loveless’ is streaming now and officially released on 11th November 2016. 

Little Cub are Dominic Gore, Duncan Tootill and Ady Acolatse.

Merging a wry, worldly and subversive form of self-effacing, diarist lyricism with sumptuously evocative electronic production, ‘Loveless’ announces  the arrival of a band at once deeply in tune with the greatest traditions of progressive, homespun British pop music and at odds with the increasingly vacuous pop culture they are born to.

Little Cub’s burgeoning reputation as one of the city’s finest new exponents of electronic pop has seen them sell out a four-night headline residency at Peckham’s Copeland Estate off the back of the release of their debut ‘Breathing Space’ EP.

‘Loveless’ showcases Little Cub at their direct best, harnessing Tootill’s astute production work – which has seen him work with the likes of George Fitzgerald, Lil Silva and more – to frontman Gore’s refreshingly self-reflexive, honest and occasionally uncomfortable poetics. With a melody by Acolaste, the lyric of ‘Loveless’, was written by Gore about a relationship Acolatse was in at the time. "Did we really lose our hearts?” the soaring chorus ponders with an odd and infectious kind of triumphant melancholy.

"I was perceiving this relationship between two great people", Gore says, "but could see it was kind of becoming less than the sum of its parts. It was neither party's fault but it was clear that both were becoming colder through the very nature of being together. It's something I've perceived a lot, these situations where if it were merely a friend going through that pain then you'd automatically feel empathy but in a romantic setting those feelings in someone else gradually come to seem ridiculous or embarrassing or even grotesque.

It's about how every time you have a relationship like that it seems to remove a part of you. You can lose your heart a little. Of course this should be horribly sad, and in a way it is, but I also think it might be in a way necessary and so the song's not completely mourning that loss."

SHIRLEY COLLINS TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM LODESTAR 4TH NOVEMBER

Shirley Collins – legendary folk singer and one of England’s most respected song collectors –  has announced her return to recording after 38 years. The new album, Lodestar, will be released on November 4th, and with it, Shirley has created the unlikeliest release of the century so far. 

Lodestar is a collection of English, American and Cajun songs dating from the 16th Century to the 1950s, recorded at Shirley’s home in Lewes by Stephen Thrower and Ossian Brown of Cyclobe and produced and musically directed by Ian Kearey.

The first track to be shared from Lodestar is ‘Cruel Lincoln’. Shirley explains the history of the song: “This is an ancient ballad, found only rarely in England. The theory is that Cruel Lincoln was a mason who was not paid for the work he did for ‘the Lord of the Manor’ and so extracted a terrible revenge”. It also features bird song recorded at the back of Shirley’s cottage. 

Born in Hastings in 1935, Shirley was fascinated by folk songs as she was growing up, songs she heard on the radio or sung by her grandparents in Anderson shelters. She left home for London to immerse herself in the burgeoning folk scene; at a party held by Ewan MacColl she met Alan Lomax, and in 1959 she joined him in the USA on the renowned field trip ‘Southern Journey’, recording American folk songs and blues, a formative journey for her personally and professionally.

On her return to England, Shirley cemented her role at the forefront of the Folk Revival,  recording over a dozen albums including the influential Folk Roots, New Routes with avant-garde guitarist Davy Graham, and No Roses, from which The Albion Country Band was formed. However, in the 1980s, Shirley lost her singing voice – later diagnosed as a form of dysphonia - and withdrew from performing live. It was only in 2014, after coaxing from David Tibet (Current 93), that Shirley sang in public for the first time since 1982. 

Though Shirley Collins (MBE) has been absent from the music scene for many years, her impact has not diminished, the likes of Graham Coxon, Jonny Greenwood, Stewart Lee and Angel Olsen laud her and a documentary The Ballad of Shirley Collins is currently in progress. THE MAGNETIC FIELDS ANNOUNCE RE-ISSUE OF 69 LOVE SONGS

The Magnetic Fields is songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt. His three-hour magnum opus 69 Love Songs is to be reissued on vinyl on October 7th through Domino Records. Comprised of 6 x 10” vinyl, the box set will include a full size 24-page colour booklet with liner notes by Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) including an in-depth interview and a track-by-track with Merritt. The box set will be limited to 1000 copies.

69 Love Songs was released in 1999 and 17 years later, it is still a singular achievement - a bold undertaking by one of pop music’s most innovative and acclaimed songwriters. Originally conceived by Merritt to be a live musical revue of 100 songs, Merritt realised that 100 songs, even at 2 minutes each, would be far too long a show and decided upon the next meaningful number, 69. 69 songs about life, loss, hope and beauty.  69 songs about the pursuit of that ever elusive and patently undefinable holy grail, love.

Stephin Merritt wrote all 69 songs but enlisted the help of numerous friends to record the album including long-time collaborator Claudia Gonson, guitarist John Woo, cellist Sam Davol and Daniel Handler. 24 of the songs feature guest vocals from LD Beghtol, Dudley Klute, Shirley Simms and Gonson.

A career-defining work (as Merritt intended it to be), 69 Love Songs routinely ranks in Best Albums of All Times lists and has earned cult status. It is a celebration to the beauty, magic, humor, frustration, longing and tenderness of the human condition.

Aaron Maine’s Porches follows the release of this year’s acclaimed Pool with the Water EP – a special opportunity to experience the music that formed the melodic skeleton of Pool in its raw state, alongside a pair of previously unreleased songs ‘Black Dress’ and ‘Black Budweiser T-Shirt’. Recorded solo in his adopted home of New York City, the Water EP strips Maine’s work down to its core, opening the curtain on his musical metamorphosis from previous releases Slow Dance In The Cosmos and those of his alias, Ronald Paris, into the Porches of today.

I spent the first year after releasing ‘Slow Dance In The Cosmos’ teaching myself how to record music. I ended up with a bunch of pretty realized demos for songs that ended up on ‘Pool’ during that process. It was a loose and explorative time for me. I wanted to release a select few of these “demos” because I always find the excitement captured by recording a song when you first write it to be almost impossible to recreate later down the line. I chose to rerecord all of the songs that were to be on ‘Pool’ because I felt like by the time I had a batch of songs that I felt would make an album, I had grown as a producer and wanted to give them another pass. Either way, it’s fun to listen back to these earlier versions of the songs and remember how they first existed.

Water is available digitally today, stream it HERE, and will be on sale as a limited edition cassette during Porches upcoming autumn tour dates. It can also be purchased online, in limited quantities, through Bandcamp and the Domino Mart.

On turning 60, legendary producer Clive Langer decided it was time to get a band together.

Previous to that moment, Clive’s CV read like a route map of the last four decades of the very best British music. As a member of legendary rock’n’roll misfits Deaf School, Langer had helped influence a generation of kids who’d go on to form bands as diverse as Madness and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Later on - with studio partner Alan Winstanley – he helped steer everything from One Step Beyond to Kilimanjaro; Too-Rye-Ay to Shipbuilding (a co-write with Elvis Costello) with stop offs for the Attractions, the Commotions, Morrissey, Roddy Frame and even the Dame himself (Bowie’s timeless classic Absolute Beginners). But something about that significant age set him on a different path.

Formed two years ago, The Clang Group are that band. Their first LP is called Practice.  It comes out on Domino on Friday the 30th of September.

Recorded at Iguana Studio in Brixton with musician mates and long time cohorts (including Suggs and Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay), Practice is jagged, melodious, ingenious, impulsive and exhilarating. Usually all the same time. Driven by a frantic and restless energy, it’s exactly the kind of record you’d hope someone would make if they woke up aged 60 thinking, “Fuck it, I’m going to start a rock’n’roll band.” Yes, that good.

SAM COOMES SHARES NEW SONG 'FORDANA' TAKEN FROM DEBUT ALBUM OUT AUGUST 19TH

Ahead of the release of Sam Coomes’ first ever solo album Bugger Me – due August 19th on Domino Records - he is pleased to share another cut from the record.  

Listen to ‘Fordana’ below, a heartfelt song that only Coomes could make with its glitchy and melancholic organ stabs. 

Coomes is probably best known as half of the long running underground pop duo Quasi, the other half being Janet Weiss, herself better known as the drummer for Sleater-Kinney. Alongside bandmate Janet Weiss, Quasi have released nine albums over the last two decades and toured all over the world. Concurrently, Sam Coomes has played and recorded with the likes of Built to Spill, Elliott Smith and Jandek, worked as a producer and scored numerous soundtracks for underground films and art installations. In short, he is not a newcomer to the scene.

Bugger Me in Coomes’ own words is Suicide meets The Beach Boys. Not the sophisticated ‘Pet Sounds’ Beach Boys, but more like ‘Surfer Girl’ stuff. More conscious reference points were Chris Montez or Timmy Thomas.” He wanted to make “entertainment music, but entertainment music meant for those not served by more mainstream entertainment music.  Maybe one might want to take a break from Sheer Hellish Miasma & enjoy some simple tunes that maybe speak to the same sense of the absurd, that likewise reject commercialism & market-based aesthetics, & even now & again pay a little homage to the raw synthesizer noise we have grown to love & even crave. Maybe timeworn themes such as love & war still resonate in the dusty backrooms of your mind (indeed maybe they are the only themes which do so).” 

Accompanied only by his organ and ‘Conny’ – a mid-‘60s rhythm box (non-programmable, “not even really a drum machine”), Coomes made a conscious choice to pare things back. He explains: “In a time where anyone with a computer & enough time on their hands can micro-manage a given piece of music to the nth degree; can process, arrange, edit & otherwise wheedle a song into a state-of-the-art showcase of outclevering the next guy… maybe allowing a song to exist at its most basic level is a means to not only subvert market-based (or, almost equivalently, technology-based) standards of production, but also a means to keep the music & the performance of the music honest.  This is assuming of course that honesty is a good thing, or at least is considered a good thing by those unmoved by mainstream entertainment music, which often reeks of dishonesty.  Whether this is a safe assumption, who knows?  Actually, I’m suspicious of people proclaiming their own honesty – so forget it.  Certainly, its artifice.  But the intent is honest artifice – like the original King Kong, as opposed to the remakes.  If King Kong for you means Willis O’Brien rather than Dino De Laurentis or Peter Jackson, then you probably have an idea of what I’m driving at.”

The band have also announced two in-store appearances to coincide with the album’s release at London’s Rough Trade East on the day of Boy King’s release, Friday 5th August, as well as Banquet Records on Thursday 25th August.

Where 2014's Present Tense album found Wild Beasts in reflective mood, absorbing a fascination with online culture and electronic music, Boy King has them, as Fleming puts it, "back to being pissed off". The quartet’s ever-present knack for sensual melody via Hayden Thorpe and Fleming's dueting vocals, Ben Little's sinuous guitar groove and Chris Talbot's potent rhythm section carries in Boy King an aggressive, snarling and priapic beast that delves into the darker side of masculinity and Thorpe's own psyche. As Hayden himself says, "After five records there had to be an element of 'what the fuck?'".

The raw pop of Boy King's songs are the perfect foil to Thorpe's libidinous lyricism: "it became apparent that that guitar almost became the character within the songs, that phallic character, the all-conquering male," he says. "I'm letting my inner Byron fully out, I thought I'd tucked him away, but he came screaming back like the Incredible Hulk." Here lies Boy King's greatest success. Between the slide of prowling aggression and interior darkness, there are glorious, gorgeous moments. It’s yet another incomparable Wild Beasts record; a visceral, sensual and jolting body of work that acts as a remarkable soundtrack to the early 21st century male malaise. Or as Thorpe puts it: "I think Boy King is an apocalyptic record. It's about swimming in the abyss. When you think about sex, you've got to think about death, they're one and the same.”

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR WHITE LUNG'S 'DEAD WEIGHT'

Canadian punk band White Lung has topped numerous “Best Album So Far” lists this year including Stereogum, Rolling Stone, Consequence of Sound, FACT and NME for Paradise, their fourth and most mature record to date. Now the band – comprised of Mish Barber-Way, Kenneth William and Anne-Marie Vassiliou - have been shortlisted for the Polaris Prize alongside artists including Carly Rae Jepsen, Grimes, and Kaytranada.

Now, White Lung are pleased to unveil the music video for ‘Dead Weight’. Directed by John Stavas, the clip features lead singer Mish Barber-Way head-banging her way through the track in hyper-kinetic fast forward. Much like the song, it’s an all-out assault on the senses and not for the faint of heart.
